Experience Abruzzo's authentic culture, traditions & festivals, gastronomic delights, heritage & unspoilt beauty

A tip for you if you are travelling in Italy - we have just purchased a internet dongle (called a Chiaveta) with WIND. This dongle is unlocked so that we can change the sim card when we move from country to country in Europe. I've been told 2 things, that I can only use WIND whilst in Italy but also if I ring and tell them I'm going to France etc and recharge they will make it work for me - I will let you know how I go.

It was Euro 20 for 10GB per month which is alot of internet. This is not a contract but a rechargeable system.

So here's hoping it all works fine - so far so good.

Still working on best telephone options.

A presto

Hi Liana, I had all sorts of problems trying to get a chiavetta (mobile internet) in Italy because I wanted it only for a short amount of time and they wanted to lock me into a plan. It seems there are pre-paid options, thanks for passing on the information.

Yes there are lots of options these days for rechargeable plans - they call them 'Ricaricabile' - Rechargeable.

As an update on communication in Italy, We have also purchased the same WInd Unlimited internet for our Iphone and for only 15 Euro a month we get 10Gb, which is huge, and 5Euro worth of phone calls within Italy at 12 Euro Cents a minute which is not bad. Had to pay 10Euro for the sim card.

With the 3G internet on my iphone it means I can use Viber for free international, national and local calls. The person you are wanting to call needs to have a smartphone with the Viber app and internet. We've been using it to call our family and it works really well - better than Skype because you use the person's normal phone number and you can call to see if they are available just like you would with any normal call.

Other tools/Apps that are useful:

- Hey Tell - for the ability to leave voicemessages free - really easy to use

- Skype - most people know about Skype but it seems to work better, in terms of clarity from an iphone/smartphone rather than computer.
