Abruzzo: A Feast for the Senses 13-day tour from 29 Aug - 10 Sept 2012

Experience Abruzzo's authentic culture, traditions & festivals, gastronomic delights, heritage & unspoilt beauty

The Uffizi, which means Offices, is a great art gallery and definitely worth the visit.

We went in February at about 2pm and there was no waiting that day even though we didn't use the pre-booked entrance.

Many of the world masters are on display. Botticelli's--must see--the "Birth of Venus" and "Spring" were my favourites, but there are other Botticelli works, which allow you to see the progression of his works especially the difference whilst under the influence of the monk Savonarola (known for his anti-renaissance fine sermons, book burnings and the destruction of works of art, known as bonfire of the vanities).

Also on display are 4 works by Leonardo (although 2 were under restoration at the time and so not on view), "The Holy Family" by Michelangelo, Carravaggio, Giotto, Titian (in Italian called Tiziano) and Raphael (Raffaello).

Disappointingly there were many rooms that were closed including the Tribune room, which is one of the main/important rooms housing the Medici collection; and Rubens was not on view.

Also on display were at least 100 statues/sculptures mostly from the Roman era - but information on these was not on display for each work so it was difficult to know what one was looking at.

The Uffizi will give you a beautiful view from its windows on the Arno and Ponte Vecchio - a must see. Go to the top level, which is on the second floor.

There is a Bar in the gallery which makes good coffee - If you stand up in the bar area a caffe latte or cappuccino will cost 2 Euro - if you sit at a table it costs 5 Euro. In warmer weather, the terrace would make a beautiful place to splurge and sit to have your coffee.

You will need at least 3-4 hours in order to take your time.
