Just finished reading Mezza Italiana by Zoe Boccabella and would recommend it to anyone. It's beautifully written, a true labour of love I'd imagine. I found it very moving in parts, and, as a child…Continue

Italian: the language of love

One of the reasons why I started learning the Italian language was because I loved the musicality of it. When you listen to it, you can appreciate why Italians use their hands when they talk. It’s a lingo that requires – no, demands – movement. And nowhere is it more beautiful sounding than in words and expressions of love.In English we call our loved ones 'darling', 'sweetheart' and 'love', which are all very nice, but they sound mundane compared to their Italian equivalent: ‘tesoro/a’…See More

Hi Gary, I have been in Italy in May and in September. In May, you can get warm weather, which can be a positive depending on what you prefer. It is still low season, so not as expensive and less tourists. And of course in Tuscany you will see the…

Gary Chow commented on Marianna's blog post '"Has travelling changed your life?"'
I would say travelling has changed my life. When I was in my mid-twenties, I ditched my job, left a relationship, and hit the road for 20 months. I went first to the States, then to Canada, across to Europe, North Africa and finally home. I had so…

Ciao Gary

I'm new to Italian Encounters. I've just been talking about Mezza Italiana when I was leaving a comment to Michelle's 'Frustrated Italophile' and then I saw your comment asking about it. I really enjoyed reading it. In fact I couldn't put it down and I cried at the end when the earthquake hits the Abruzzo. A sign of a good book I think!! I also liked reading about growing up in an Italian migrant family in Brisbane in the 70s and 80s, usually it's Sydney or Melbourne.

I liked Mezza Italiana from Zoe's perspective of having Italian heritage but my friend Sandra who doesn't have an Italian background loved reading about Zoe's husband who doesn't have an Italian background but desperately loves everything Italian and wants to be Italian. Quite funny how Zoe is trying to be 'Australian' and he is trying to be 'Italian'. Also, the desciptions in the writing are just lovely. Made me feel like I was in a village in Italy a part of village life. I remember the same sounds and scents she descibes. Would definitely recommend it.
