Sulmona's sweet gift for the royal nuptials

Eye-catching display of confetti (sugared almonds)

Background and Tradition

Sulmona, in the Abruzzo region of Italy, is known as the 'citta' d'amore' (city of love) where artisans carry on the centuries-old tradition of producing quality confetti that are known the world over.

'Confetti' and weddings go hand-in-hand as symbols of a happy life. Traditionally, after the religious ceremony when the newly-weds leave the church, the guests shower the bride and groom with sugared almonds (as a symbol of happiness), rice (...abundance), and rose petals (...love and patience).

Wherever Italians have migrated they've invariably taken their traditions with them--especially when they involve celebrations and food...have you been invited to an Italian wedding, christening, significant anniversary, etc? I'm sure you've received a 'bomboniere' or 'thank you' gift from the hosts.

Sulmona's gift to William and Kate

Personalised 'confetti' in white and gold is the gift from Sulmona, home of the 'confetto' to Prince William and Kate Middleton for their wedding on Friday, 29 April. Each 'confetto' is inscribed with the name of the bride and groom, the date and place of the wedding.

The gift also includes a special bouquet of 'confetti' for the bride, highlighting the distinguished artisan-style product from Sulmona.

While in Italy gold 'confetti' represent a gold anniversary in England, where this tradition does not exist, they can symbolise royalty.

The royal wedding has provided an opportunity for Italy to promote a world-famous product as well as the 'Made in Italy' brand.

A letter accompanying the gift from Franco Iezzi, president of the 'Azione di ricerca e sviluppo', who produced the commemorative 'confetti' for the royal couple reads:

"E' la tradizione centenaria in Italia offrire agli sposi, agli amici e agli ospiti i confetti di Sulmona famosi in tutto il mondo. Essi sono simbolo di dolcezza, di serenita' ed augurio agli sposi di una vita felice. I cittadini di Sulmona sono lieti di poter offrire a voi questo dono semplice che pero' contiene in se' un grande e sincero augurio per questo vostro intenso cammino."

(It is a centuries-old tradition in Italy to offer the bride and groom, friends and hosts confetti from Sulmona, famous all over the world. They are a symbol of sweetness, peace and hope of a happy life for the bride and groom. The citizens of Sulmona are happy to be able to offer you this simple gift that nevertheless, is in itself a sincere wish for this your great journey together.)

Yes! An excellent PR exercise and I'm sure the product exposure at this event won't do it any harm at all!

How very enterprising of Sulmona to send these to the Royals!
