When fascination turns to obsession...

Porta di Strada Maggiore, Bologna

Just realised that my travels in Italy have taken their own course and I've developed an obsession: I need to photograph every 'PORTA', 'PORTICO' and 'PORTONE' I come across.

So, here's just a small sample of the snaps from Bologna, Dozza, Ravenna, Parma, Ferrara, Modena (Emilia Romagna).

Just enchanting - wonder what lies beyond?

Portici in the old city centre of Bologna

'Porta' in the city of Ravenna

Artistic 'Portone' in Dozza

This is me in Ferrara

Parma - guess we would call this a gate or 'cancello'

Modena - whoever lives here is lucky

And here are just a few more...

So is this an Obession or a Passion? Is there a difference? What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I too Jo, Marianna, Margaret and Maree, have caught this passion/obsession. On this trip i started taking photos of doors - actually started in Zanzibar. Now wherever I go I notice the doors. I have also just began to notice the filigree (sp?) in the ironwork in railings & balconies and photographing these too - the variety is amazing.
Jo, look forward to seeing some of your photos here in June. Enjoy

Marianna, It's a passion, not an obsession! Perhaps, as you say, is there a difference? The architecture of Italia is devine, and is one of the many reasons I return to my favourite country - Italia. During my last trip to Italia in May, I also photographed the architecture. This included many 'porta'. I'm certain the residents take the doors for granted, or perhaps not, as Italians appreciate beauty! I will return to Italia in June and am certain that I will continue my own passion of photography by taking many more photos of 'porta'.

Ciao Margaret - have a great trip--how can you not! Capture the amazing history, frenetic pace, the uniqueness of Rome on camera - bring along a spare memory card so you don't miss anything!

Love to hear about it all, please keep in touch or give us a run down when you return.

Buon viaggio e in bocca al lupo...

Marianna

HI Margaret, Buon voyage for your trip next week!

5 weeks is a wonderful time to stay - long enough to feel you are away. Check out a site called http://www.aglioolioepeperoncino.com - Eleanora lives in Rome and I once saw a great blog in there on restuarants to try whilst in Rome.

We'd love to see your photos either when your abroad or on you return.

Buon divertimento!

Liana

I can understand it becoming an overwhelming need to capture everything. I land in Rome next Saturday and look forward to spending five weeks photographing everything I see where ever we go.

I too, love your subject and your work - Andrea Palladio everywhere - a very understandable passion indeed.  Maree is right, there is so much beauty in their ornateness.  We just don't have the history.  On tour, we can do a photo workshop on proportions and composition to get the very best out of shots.

I agree lamp posts, doors, buildings, fountains the list is endless ....I shot 400 photos by my second day in Rome!

Thank you Maree I enjoyed the photos you've posted of Venice--they're beautiful.

I must admit there aren't many subjects off limits when I'm in Italy and I've got a camera in my hands.

It is not an obession as I had done the same when I went to Italy. We just dont have doors and entries like this in Australia. Every one you see is so inviting. I was going to put mine into a book and call it Avanti but never did. These are great shots!
